The Men’s Story Project: Bringing Critical Conversations about Masculinities, Health and Justice into Mainstream Forum

During the 2010 National Sexual Assault Conference, which took place in Hollywood Sept. 1-3, 2010there were more than 80 workshops. The largest track was the Prevention Track sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Workshop Title: The Men’s Story Project: Bringing Critical Conversations about Masculinities, Health and Justice into Mainstream Forum

Description:  The Men’s Story Project (MSP) is a replicable arts & community dialogue project that brings critical dialogue about masculinities, health and justice into public forums. In each event, local men share stories about their lives in various mediums, on topics including sexuality, romantic relationships, friendship, family, mentors, rites of passage, violence, HIV/AIDS and spirituality – all with a framing focus on exploration of masculinities and men?s roles; presentations are followed by facilitated discussion. This workshop will present the MSP model and research background; progress to date; future directions; ways to create & evaluate MSP initiatives in local contexts; and ways to use the model to address men?s violence (perpetration and victimization/survivorship) in locally- and culturally-relevant ways. Opportunities for further training will be discussed.
