CHARM: Family Planning as Prevention in Rural India
Anita Raj, PhD, MS of the Center on Gender Equity and Health (GEH) at University of California, San Diego and Niranjan Saggurti, PhD, of Population Council in New Delhi, India and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation discuss the prevention implication of the paper “Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial Evaluation of a Gender Equity and Family Planning Intervention for Married Men and Couples in Rural India‘ recently published in the journal PLOS One. This paper studies how the Charm Program, a family planning program in which both husband and wife receive gender-equity counseling improves contraceptive practices and reduce sexual intimate partner violence in married couples.
